Clay, in the time of Covid is a snapshot of our clay lives during Covid 19, so far. Our guild members were invited to send in a snapshot of their studios (studio pets welcome), their favourite piece of work created since March, or something else clay related that summed up a part of their experience as a clay artist during Covid 19.

This heart series was purchased by the Nova Scotia Art Bank this spring. This work represents my experience working as an emergency medical dispatcher which in the time of Covid has become much more challenging. - Shauna MacLeod, Black Crow Pottery

This is a compilation from some of the thousands of ceramic 💕touchstones made by 13 of our Guild members.

They were distributed to many of those impacted by the April 2020 mass killings within our Nova Scotian community. Not only was this a great tragedy but the grief was compounded by the isolation imposed by Covid. - Gerri Frager

When Covid first put everyone into isolation I did a (socially distanced) take home pottery kit. There were online video instructions and parents could do little projects at their tables with their kids. Then I collected the pieces in boxes and fired it all with a clear glaze. People could collect their work from a table outside, by appointment.

I couldn't make anything myself, because my kids were home from school, but I could work on this project over a few weekends so some people had something new to try while we were all stuck at home! - Amy Noel, Wabiscotia Pottery

I worked on my entries for the Guild’s “4 x 4 x 4” early in spring, and chose to do social commentary while socially isolated. I was pleased enough with my “Four words: no justice no peace” that I used that motif again in a larger piece later in the summer; the vase is my favourite piece from this time of Covid.

Blue box with copper wire

Porcelain, copper wire, 14x14x14cm not including wire

Piece took two months to tie the 800 copper wire knots. My kiln was not connected after a big downsizing move, and I could not get an electrician to come into our house. I used what I had in my studio. It got me through a time when we were self isolating for two weeks and then more of the same afterwards.
